VF5 was relatively plain, but super polished and sold me a PS3 instantly. However, by the time of VF4 and Evo I needed something new and interesting, and at the time I also got in touch with regular gaming communities and a small, dedicated fanbase of VF, so I learned to love the game there. VF3 only got that hilariously barebones DC port which got completely stomped by Soul Calibur. Meanwhile, I barely got to play VF1-2 because I didn't have a Saturn and arcades weren't a thing. None of the characters really interest me, there was maybe Baek (but he got sidelined) and Yoshi before he became a freakshow. Soul Blade beat T1 and T2, various Capcom games beat T3, everything beat T4 (including DoA2 and 3), and VF4 Evo beat T5. It never felt right to me, and even though I bought every goddamn game up until TTT2 I never ever really liked it. That being said, I think Virtua Fighter 5 still takes it. I mean, could there be a bigger gap between two titles I think Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter 2 are both much closer.
I know it's an unfair simplification, but Tekken to me is "random attack juggles the opponent, then a string of random light jabs that makes the opponent keep bouncing up like a beach ball". The comparison between Virtua Fighter 4 and Tekken 4 is just so off-kilter.
